Canon EOS 5D Preview : Today we were invited to join Canon with their presentation of the 2nd digital wave that will hit the world. Amazing, how many products Canon have launched this year, every 4 days they have launched a new digital imaging product! During the presentation I was able to get my hands on the new Canon 5D digital SLR camera. Although it was only for a short moment I was able to get a first impression and the following article gives you a closer look at the already famous new Canon EOS 5D D-SLR. For those of you who already start ordering their own Canon 5D, the price in the Netherlands is set at EUR 3299,- including VAT. Expect the Canon EOS 5D digital reflex camera to be available on the market in September 2005.

Canon 5D - Only the strong survive : By the start of the presentation we were welcomed by a video clip starring Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. According to Mogens Jensen: "today we are facing a digital market with around 100 competitors, Canon estimates that in a few years from now only 3 - 4 competitors will be active in the same digital imaging market!" Of course it easy to claim such a thing, having a market share (Netherlands) of around 56% in digital SLR and almost in every category in the digital imaging market a number one position, but still, it is quite shocking.

Canon 5D D-SLR preview : Packed in a room of 3 x 3 meters together with 40 highly interested journalist I finally got where I came for in the first place, the Canon EOS 5D. Amazingly light weighted, around 820 g, and a perfect balanced body are the first things that comes in my mind when holding the Canon 5D in my hands. The new Canon 24 - 105mm F4.0L IS USM lens was mounted on the EOS 5D D-SLR and we found the new Canon BG-E4 battery grip attached to the camera. This new accessory is especially designed for the EOS 5D. The new grip is made from the same material as the camera's exterior; magnesium alloy. The BG-E4 grip accommodates two Canon battery packs or six AA batteries. The grip features a shutter release button, AE/FE lock button, AF point selector and main dial to enable comfortable use of the camera when held vertically. Together the combination feels solid as a rock.

Canon EOS 5D - Connectivity : The Canon 5D D-SLR features a Hi-Speed interface that allows fast transfer of high-resolution photos from the 5D to a computer. Such a high speeds connection is also ideal when shooting with the camera in a studio environment. The full frame images can be stored straight to the hard drive of the camera when the camera is connected and controlled by a computer, providing full screen previews of the images. The EOS 5D digital SLR is a perfect solution for the professional studio photographer or for the journalist in the field.

Canon 5D digital SLR - CompactFlash support : The EOS 5D supports CompactFlash type I and type II cards, including 2GB capacity and larger. A digital SLR like the EOS 5D needs fast flash cards to get the best results. Shooting 12 Megapixel photos in a sequence of 3 per second will need some power from the camera but also a fast flash card. Today, CompactFlash cards are available with a maximum storage capacity of 8GB and in various speeds.

Canon 5D digital reflex camera - Full frame CMOS : Today's strength of Canon is the fact that all the important parts of a digital camera like the Canon EOS 5D are developed in the house, DIGIC II, CMOS, and the lens are available on demand and gives Canon the advantage of taking the lead in almost every field of the digital imaging market. The CMOS image sensor is already five years in-house developed, and with the latest CMOS sensor featuring 12.8 Megapixels in combination with the powerful DIGIC II processor the Canon EOS 5D seams to be ready to gain again more market share for Canon. Full production models are on their way and we are very curious what the random noise result will be. A full frame sensor means larger pixels and the on-chip noise reduction will do its work to eliminate all the disturbing noise to get clean, high quality images. One things that came out of the feedback from professional photographers was to get a smaller sized full-frame, high-resolution digital SLR camera, the Canon EOS 5D fulfils their demands!

Canon CMOS image sensor - Advantage : Although the majority of the manufacturers are using CCD as their major image sensor, Canon's image sensor for D-SLR is definitely CMOS. One of the reasons Canon wanted to develop and use a full frame CMOS is only one: image quality. For Canon it is very clear, full frame image sensor means improves resolution and larger pixels. The pixel size can be increased dramatically while maintaining the number of pixels. Larger pixels are also more sensitive and, even better, have a wider dynamic range. This results in more detail in the shadow and highlights and in high ISO lesser noise. By using full frame Canon gives professional photographers the feeling they always had when using their lenses. Wide stays wide, the viewfinder is brighter and larger compared to smaller image sensor based digital SLR cameras. We are very sure that we haven't seen the end of the race of high resolution CMOS yet, 16 Megapixels is, at this moment, the ultimate top for D-SLR, however the door to the Canon engineers room has a sign: .. work in progress!

Canon 24 - 105mm F4.0L IS USM lens : The new Canon lens was mounted on the EOS 5D body. The price of this new professional lens will be EURO 1379,- including VAT (Netherlands). The new L-serie lens is designed to give the best performance for the demanding professional. Weather resistance, and more important the very handy Image Stabilizer is one hell of a combination. Of course introduced next to the Canon EOS 5D D-SLR the new lens will be a wanna have for the guy in the field. Once you use an Image Stabilizer you will never work without it. The Image Stabilizer (IS) reduces image blur and gives you almost 3 stops extra, a fact that is very valuable in the field where working conditions can vary by the minute. Gyro sensors inside of the 24 - 105mm F4.0L IS USM lens detect unwanted vibrations, triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane.

Canon 5D DSLR - Ergonomics : The button lay-out of the Canon 5D is very simple, you might expect a whole bunch of buttons to control this high-end model, but in fact it all seems very user-friendly and easy. Very handy is the new features that enables to save certain camera settings to the C position of the Mode Dial. In this way you are able to switch very fast with the same camera to a completely different shooting environment without having to change all those settings again and again or even use two cameras, one for each moment. Settings like ISO (50 - 3200ISO), AF mode, Picture Style, White balance, Exposure mode, etc. are all stored in this C setting mode. The Canon EOS 5D can be configured in very detailed way, so it seems almost impossible that the camera is not able to the job…

Canon Picture Style pre-sets : New is the feature Canon calls 'Picture Style'. After hearing the explanation of this feature I understand that this is just a very simple way of getting more control of the image quality in the camera. In fact, by using the Picture Style pre-sets you are more or less changing the image quality in the camera in stead of doing post-production afterwards. By choosing one of the Picture Style pre-sets you choose a different kind of 'film' type. Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome are all styles that more or less influence the end result, giving it their own finishing touch. More Picture Style files will be available for download via the Canon web site.

Picture Style - Wider processing parameters : The new processing parameters for the Canon EOS 5D digital reflex camera are expanded and are more adaptable for your needs. Sharpness, Colour Saturation, Colour Tone and Contrast can all be adjusted independently within each Picture Style setting. The creative possibilities are enormous; the Canon 5D feature 48,816 possible setting combinations!

Canon EOS 5D D-SLR camera review : It will be a race among the reviewers; a few samples will arrive the upcoming weeks and there is too much demand. As soon as we are able to get a full-production model in the office we will bring you a Canon EOS 5D digital SLR review. For now, we were able to give you this exclusive preview from the new Canon 5D. At the upcoming IFA 2005 show Canon will be one of the participants and of course the Canon EOS 5D D-SLR will be one of the highlights!
